Description
A warm, cozy, and comforting Dutch apple pie featuring a perfectly balanced mix of tart and sweet apples topped with a buttery, crunchy crumb topping. Easy to make and perfect for family gatherings or holidays.
Ingredients
- 3 large Granny Smith apples (about 1 ½ pounds / 680g), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 medium Fuji apples (about 1 pound / 450g), peeled, cored, and sliced
- ¾ cup granulated sugar (150g)
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar (50g)
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15ml)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (for filling)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g, for crumb topping)
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (225g)
- 1 double pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Prepare the pie crust: Roll out and place the crust in a 9-inch pie dish. Trim and crimp edges. Chill in the fridge for 15 minutes if homemade.
- Prep the apples: Peel, core, and slice Granny Smith and Fuji apples into ¼-inch slices. Toss with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, 2 tablespoons flour, and a pinch of salt until evenly coated.
- Make the crumb topping: In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup flour, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt. Add cold cubed butter and cut in with a pastry cutter or fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized butter bits.
- Assemble the pie: Pour apple filling into chilled crust, spreading evenly. Sprinkle crumb topping generously over apples, leaving some larger crumbs for texture.
- Bake the pie: Place pie on a baking sheet and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 50-60 minutes until filling bubbles and topping is golden brown. Cover crust edges with foil if browning too quickly.
- Cool before serving: Let pie cool completely for about 2 hours to set filling before slicing.
Notes
Use a mix of tart Granny Smith and sweet Fuji apples for balanced flavor and texture. Keep butter cold for crumb topping to avoid sogginess. Chill crust before baking to prevent shrinking. Use a baking sheet to catch drips. Let pie cool fully before slicing for best results. Can assemble pie a day ahead and bake fresh. For vegan version, substitute butter and crust with plant-based alternatives.
