Description
These crispy baked parmesan crackers are an easy homemade snack with simple ingredients, perfect for a crunchy, cheesy treat that you can make on repeat.
Ingredients
- 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (100g) finely grated parmesan cheese (freshly grated from a block)
- 4 tablespoons (60g) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon salt (kosher or sea salt preferred)
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (optional)
- 2–3 tablespoons cold water
- Optional extras: red pepper flakes, dried rosemary, smoked paprika
Instructions
- Mix the flour, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a mixing bowl until evenly combined.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture and cut it in using a pastry cutter or two forks until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits of butter.
- Stir in the finely grated parmesan cheese until evenly mixed, being careful not to overwork the dough.
- Add 2 tablespoons of cold water and mix gently. If the dough is still crumbly, add the last tablespoon of water carefully to form a firm, slightly sticky dough.
- Place the dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll out to about 1/8 inch (3mm) thickness.
- Remove the top parchment paper and cut the dough into squares or rectangles with a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Transfer the parchment with the cut dough onto a baking sheet.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15-18 minutes, or until the crackers are golden and crispy around the edges. Start checking at 12 minutes to avoid burning.
- Transfer the crackers to a cooling rack and let them crisp up as they cool.
- Store completely cooled crackers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
Notes
Keep butter cold to ensure flaky, crispy texture. Roll dough thin (about 1/8 inch) for best crispness. Watch baking time closely starting at 12 minutes to prevent burning. Store crackers in an airtight container to maintain crispness. Reheat briefly in oven if crackers soften. Customize flavor with herbs or spices like rosemary, thyme, red pepper flakes, or smoked paprika. Sprinkle extra parmesan on top before baking for a caramelized finish.
