Crispy Honey Garlic Tofu

Description

A simple and delicious vegan dinner featuring crispy tofu coated in a sticky honey garlic sauce. This easy 5-ingredient recipe delivers a perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors with a crunchy exterior and tender inside.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 14 ounces (400g) extra-firm tofu
  • 3 tablespoons (45ml) honey (or pure maple syrup/agave nectar for vegan)
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) soy sauce (low-sodium preferred)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced (about 2 teaspoons)
  • 3 tablespoons (45ml) vegetable oil (canola, sunflower, or avocado oil)
  • Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes
  • Optional: chopped green onions
  • Optional: sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu to remove as much moisture as possible by wrapping it in a clean kitchen towel and placing a heavy skillet or canned goods on top for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Slice the pressed tofu into ½-inch thick rectangles or cubes.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together honey, soy sauce, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes if using. Set aside.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a 10-12 inch non-stick or cast iron skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Add tofu pieces in a single layer without overcrowding the pan. Cook undisturbed for 4-5 minutes until the bottoms are golden and crispy.
  6. Carefully flip the tofu and cook the other side for another 4-5 minutes. Repeat until all sides are crispy.
  7. Lower heat to medium-low and pour the honey garlic sauce over the tofu. Gently toss to coat each piece and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens and clings to the tofu.
  8. Transfer tofu to a plate and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve with steamed rice, sautéed greens, quinoa, noodles, or in wraps.

Notes

Press tofu thoroughly for best crispiness. Avoid overcrowding the pan to prevent steaming. Use medium-high heat for frying and lower heat when adding sauce to avoid burning. Use silicone spatula or tongs to prevent breaking tofu. Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 4 days and reheat best in a skillet with a splash of oil or water.
