Smothered Pork Chops: Easy Recipe Kids Love Making

  • Author: Natalia
  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

A family-friendly recipe for tender pork chops smothered in a rich, creamy onion gravy. This dish is designed to be easy to prepare and allows children to safely participate in the cooking process, making it a perfect weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 46 thick-cut bone-in or boneless pork chops (about 1 inch thick)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Prep ingredients by slicing onions, mincing garlic, and patting pork chops dry. Season chops with salt and pepper.
  2. Spread flour in a shallow dish. Dredge each pork chop in flour, shaking off excess, and place on a plate.
  3. Heat butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Sear pork chops for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove chops to a plate.
  4. Reduce heat to medium. Add sliced onions to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown (10-12 minutes).
  5. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1 minute to cook out the raw taste.
  6. Slowly whisk in chicken broth and heavy cream. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Stir constantly until gravy thickens and bubbles.
  7. Return pork chops to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until internal temperature reaches 145°F.
  8. Serve immediately, spooning extra gravy over the top.

Notes

Patting the chops dry is essential for a good sear. Do not rush the onions; caramelizing them adds depth to the gravy. Use low-sodium broth to control salt levels. This recipe does not freeze well due to the dairy content. For leftovers, reheat gently in a skillet with a splash of milk or broth to maintain creaminess.
