Description
A family-friendly recipe for tender pork chops smothered in a rich, creamy onion gravy. This dish is designed to be easy to prepare and allows children to safely participate in the cooking process, making it a perfect weeknight meal.
Ingredients
- 4–6 thick-cut bone-in or boneless pork chops (about 1 inch thick)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional: 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Prep ingredients by slicing onions, mincing garlic, and patting pork chops dry. Season chops with salt and pepper.
- Spread flour in a shallow dish. Dredge each pork chop in flour, shaking off excess, and place on a plate.
- Heat butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Sear pork chops for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown. Remove chops to a plate.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add sliced onions to the skillet and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown (10-12 minutes).
- Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1 minute to cook out the raw taste.
- Slowly whisk in chicken broth and heavy cream. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Stir constantly until gravy thickens and bubbles.
- Return pork chops to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 15 minutes, flipping halfway through, until internal temperature reaches 145°F.
- Serve immediately, spooning extra gravy over the top.
Notes
Patting the chops dry is essential for a good sear. Do not rush the onions; caramelizing them adds depth to the gravy. Use low-sodium broth to control salt levels. This recipe does not freeze well due to the dairy content. For leftovers, reheat gently in a skillet with a splash of milk or broth to maintain creaminess.
