Game Day Crispy Onion Ring Tower: 5-Ingredient Easy Appetizer

  • Author: Natalia
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 10 servings 1x

Description

A quick, pantry-friendly appetizer featuring crispy fried onion rings stacked into a tower and served with tangy ranch dressing. Perfect for game day or last-minute snacking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions (or sweet onions like Vidalia)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1.5 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt (divided)
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper (divided)
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for breadcrumbs)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 cups vegetable or canola oil (for frying)
  • 1 cup ranch dressing (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Peel onions and slice into half-inch thick rounds. Separate rings and pat them completely dry with paper towels.
  2. Set up a dredging station with three shallow bowls: one with flour mixed with 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp pepper; one with whisked eggs and water; one with breadcrumbs mixed with salt, garlic powder, and optional cayenne.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high heat to 350°F.
  4. Dredge each onion ring in flour, shaking off excess, then dip in egg wash, and finally press into breadcrumbs to coat fully.
  5. Carefully place rings in hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Transfer fried rings to a wire rack set over a baking sheet to drain. Sprinkle with a little extra salt while hot.
  7. Stack the rings on a platter to form a tower, starting with larger rings at the bottom.
  8. Serve immediately with ranch dressing on the side for dipping.

Notes

Pat onions dry thoroughly to ensure crispy coating. Do not overcrowd the pan to maintain oil temperature. For extra crunch, double dip in egg and breadcrumbs. Can be baked at 400°F for 15-20 minutes for a lighter option. Reheat in oven or air fryer at 375°F to restore crispiness.
